First incorporated in 1974, Child Care Services of York County has continued to work diligently to fulfill it’s mission. As we begin our second 30 years of service, the work we have taken on has only increased in importance. The great under-reported story of the second half of the twentieth century in this country has been the impact of the national economy on the modern American family. The combination of the cost of survival (housing, transportation, medical care and food) has far out stripped the average individual income in Maine. That, and the evolving nature of kinds of work available, means that fewer and fewer families can afford to have a stay at home parent. Child Care as an economic necessity has become the norm for York County communities.
Beyond the financial needs of these families, the evidence of the positive (or negative) impact of good (or poor) child care on our children has become overwhelming. It is now clear that the real need for our communities goes beyond the need for available care, and extends to the need for quality child care for all children.
This is the work that Child Care Services of York County assumed 30 years ago, and it is our privilege and great joy to continue this work into the new century.
